Head towards Naples on the A16, then take the A30 to Salerno. Follow the signs for Parco Nazionale del Vesuvio, there is an 8 mile drive up to the summit from the entrance. This road ends at about 1000 metres up with a car park. There are wardens who will take your parking money, parking lower down and taking a little more by foot may save you this. The car park also has a café, souvenir stand and the ticket stall. When we went up there was a stall offering to loan you a stick for the climb, they will pester for a “tip for the stick” when you return it. The climb takes about 30mins to the crater and is fairly gentle. However, the lava scree can be slippery, so wear good, comfortable footwear and take drink & snack with you as these are expensive at the stalls at the top. Once you get to the top you can peer into the crater and if the mist has cleared you’ll be rewarded by some spectacular views.
